Bayarea Sikhs partner with Glide Memorial Church to feed the hungry.

San Francisco Langar

On November 20, 2010 the Sikh community of the Bay Area, along with United Sikhs and Sikhcess will come together to celebrate the Gurpurab of Guru Nanak Dev Ji  with a “Langar for Needy” at Glide Memorial in San Francisco. Guru Nanak Dev Ji introduced the concept of selflesscommunal service – seva and community kitchen (langar) – several hundred years ago. There could not be a better way to celebrate his birth anniversary than reaching out to those in need with his message of compassion.

United Sikhs is parterning with, Sikhcess, Fremont gurdwar Sahib Sangat, and Bay Area Sikh Community to celebrate Month of november as a Sikh awareness and Appreciation m,onth and to celebrate the Gurpurab of Guru Nanak Dev Ji   with a “Langar for the Needy” at Glide Memorial Church in San Francisco on November 20, 2010.

For the Sikh community seva (selfless service) does not have a missionary objective. We serve humanity regardless of race, color, ethnicity, religion or caste. We do so without any expectation of a reward or return. We do not use it as a means to convert or coerce others into embracing Sikhism. We perform seva with the sole purpose of helping those in need. We do not judge those in need for their situation, and thank almighty for giving us an opportunity to serve.

Furthermore, given the unparalleled economic success of our community in several fields including business, IT, medicine, trucking and farming, this is an opportunity for us to reach out to the community and provide hot, healthy meals for those who cannot provide for themselves. By performing this seva of providing langar, we hope to give back to the community that has accepted us. With November designated as Sikh awareness month by the state of California, this event will provide us an opportunity to demonstrate Sikh principles in action.

Details of the Event are as follows:

Venue:  Glide Memorial Methodist Church, 330 Ellis Street, San Francisco, CA 94102

Date: November 20, 2010

Time: 12:00 to 1:30

About Glide Memorial Church: It serves the homeless and needy community of San Francisco throughout the year and has offered the Sikh community several opportunities in past to do seva. This year too, they are very excited to have us and have insisted that we serve the same food that we serve in our langar traditionally. They have extended full support to us in order to make this a good experience for both our volunteers and for those who they serve.

We would like to encourage you to join us in this effort, to serve the community, and to help us raise awareness about Sikhism. You can participate by donating or volunteering for the langar. We are looking for volunteers to help us with cooking, transportation, and serving of the langar. We also need volunteers as designated drivers, ushers, and for cleaning before and after the langar. You can donate cash or food items.

We would like to encourage you to donate with open hearts to provide a hot meal for the hungry. We will provide volunteer hours for high school students and all cash donations are tax deductible.

To donate or volunteer please call: (510) 299-7982 or (510) 872-5987.

Please join us in making this event a great success!
